Course Expectations

The WFR course is the industry standard certification for guides and trip leaders.

Our new hybrid format begins with three weeks of online learning including readings, videos, and quizzes. You will spend 10 to 15 hours each week in the online portion and be required to finish assignments to progress. You will complete your course with a 5-day in-person program focusing on skills and scenarios. These are the last 5 days of the listed course dates.

There will be one evening sessions on the 3rd day of the in-person portion (subject to rescheduling based on local weather and other logistics). Your rescue gear needs to be packed and ready to go at any moment throughout the course. Please refer to and follow the WFR Gear List closely, and contact us with any questions you may have.

NOLS provides its own CPR certification within this course. It incorporates the American Heart Association’s 2020 curriculum guidelines with wilderness protocols to deliver a set of skills that is pertinent to our use in a wilderness setting.

Bad things happen outdoors and usually in bad weather! So, be prepared for the weather…dress in layers that you can be removed indoors or in the sun, and layer up when we go outside. Full rain protection is a necessity, both rain tops and pants. Your comfort and ability to pay attention during this intense course will be helped if you stay well-hydrated and have snacks on hand to munch during class. The course ends with a written exam and a scenario-based practical exam. You must score 70% or better on the written exam and pass the practical exam to be eligible for certification. It is your responsibility to pass the exams on your own, and to let us know throughout the course when you are finding challenges and needing additional help. It is our job as educators to help you know where you are succeeding and where we see you are needing additional help, so that you can focus your energies and be successful at course end.

The course ends near 6PM on the last day with the exams, student evaluations of the experience, and graduation. Please do not make travel plans that require an earlier departure or you will have to make alternative testing arrangements at a later course.

Additional Details

You will receive access to an e-version of the text and handbook during the online portion of the course – you can print the handbook if you like. The Wilderness Medicine Field Guide will be given to you on Day 1 of the course.

Course Outline

The 80-hour combined online and in-person Wilderness First Responder course is the industry standard for people who work and play outdoors.

Hybrid WFR Schedule Jan 2025

Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

When: Sunday, April 20, from 10am - 12pm
Where: Squam Lakes Association, 534 US Route 3, Holderness NH 03245

Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on Sunday, April 20, from 10am - 12pm at our pollinator gardens by the lake. These gardens haven’t been tended in over 3 years, so come help us tackle the hard job of weeding and preparing the ground for new plants! Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC) AmeriCorps member, Emma Murray, will lead the effort to prepare the garden beds while teaching proper practices and some plant identification. In the past we have planted many native flowers and shrubs and would love to reclaim that area. We will be using trowels, shovels, our hands and hoes to weed and clear out some trailing nightshade vines that have taken over parts of the gardens. In addition to weeding, we will stake out potential locations for the new plants we are getting.

Pollinator gardens help save the declining insect populations. They provide food, shelter and water for native pollinators that would otherwise be struggling. Pollinators are important for many aspects of the environment and keep the food chain in balance, not only for animals, but for humans too. Nearly every three bites of everything you eat are made possible by pollination. Come spend your time in a positive and meaningful way while learning about native plants.

For more information, or to sign up for this Adventure Ecology program, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other Adventure Ecology programs throughout the year. These free programs are open to the public and cover a variety of nature and conservation related topics. The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the LRCC AmeriCorps members at the SLA who perform important conservation work in support of the Association’s mission.

The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.

Get the Dirt on Soil

Get the Dirt on Soil

When: Saturday, April 5, from 9 - 11am
Where: Squam Lakes Association, 534 US Route 3, Holderness NH 03245

Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on Saturday, April 5, from 9 - 11am to learn all about soil! We will learn about the three major types of soil: sand, silt, and clay at the SLA headquarters. There will be a focus on gardening and soil health just in time for spring! Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC) AmeriCorps member, Emma Murray, will lead the hike and teach participants how to identify the soils you have in your backyard and explain all the benefits of a good, healthy soil.

Soil is the building block of all natural life. A good soil can make or break how well your garden and landscaping blooms. Knowing the classification of your soil, its moisture content, the pH and other characteristics will help you make your land as productive as it can be. Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of soil health and will enjoy getting their hands dirty experimenting. The SLA works to conserve all parts of the Squam Watershed, so come learn more about soil classification, the role microbiomes play in conservation, and how to use this information for your very own garden.

Geological Journey

Geological Journey

When: Saturday, March 29, from 12:30 - 2:30pm

Where: West Rattlesnake Mountain Trailhead, Center Sandwich, NH 03227

Ever wonder how Squam Lake was formed? What about the surrounding mountains? Come join Lakes Region Conservation Corp member Miranda Fisher on an educational hike about local geology to learn more. As the snow and ice start to melt this spring we can travel back in time and learn about how the glaciers affected the landscape millions of years ago. We will meet at the West Rattlesnake parking lot at 12:15pm on March 29th for a 2 mile out and back hike to the summit of West Rattlesnake. This trail is mildly difficult but we will be taking our time on the way up!

The topography of local rivers, lakes, and mountains all affect how water travels to and from Squam lake. On this hike we will explore the timescales of how these formations happened dating back hundreds of millions of years and how we are still affected by them today. This is the perfect chance to dig a little deeper into the geological history of some of your favorite places and think about what timescales mean for our current conservation efforts.

When: Sunday, March 23, from 10:00am - 1:00pm

Where: Squam Lakes Association, 534 Us Route 3, Holderness, NH 03245

Join LRCC members Emma Murray and Sydney Paradise at the Squam Lakes headquarters on March 23 for a drop in event from 10am - 1pm to make your own bird feeders and learn about proper bird feeding etiquette. There will be a short presentation with a take home brochure of proper bird feeding practices at 10am, then after that it is a drop in event to make your very own birdhouse! Materials will be provided but if you have your own recyclables or china that need a new life, feel free to bring them in.

The lakes region is such a good spot for bird watching and feeding so it is common to see bird feeders in everyone’s yard. This is an opportunity to come snag some bird seed for your own garden and learn about why, how and when we feed wild animals. At the SLA we enjoy all types of recreation and try to involve the public as much as possible. For people who can’t often get out to Squam lake this would be a great way to recreate in your own backyard.

Who’s the Manager: Land Use and History Walk

When: Thursday, March 20, from 10:00am - 12:00pm

Where: Chamberlain-Reynolds Memorial Forest, West Fire Road parking lot, College Rd, Center Harbor, NH 03226

Ever wonder who’s in charge of your favorite hiking trail? Come find out on the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) land management hike. We will meet at the Chamberlain Reynolds trailhead on Thursday, March 20, from 10:00am-12:00pm for a peaceful walk through the woods. This hike will be roughly 1.5 miles on relatively flat terrain. While walking we will do a deeper dive into what organizations play a role in maintaining the land and trails. We will also explore the history of Chamberlain Reynolds and how the New England Forestry Foundation maintains the land.

Collaboration between organizations in the Lakes Region and NH at large is crucial to helping maintain a healthy watershed. At the SLA we work with multiple different partners to protect and maintain many of the trails in the area as a way to promote conservation and recreation in the watershed. It’s important to recognize our partners, their specialties, and the work they do! This hike will be the perfect opportunity to refocus before spring and take a moment of gratitude for all the work that goes into protecting the Squam watershed.
